This is one of the Ramadan crafts I am most excited about sharing. You’ve probably seen gorgeous chalk pen window art all over the place during winter for Christmas, but have you ever thought about doing it at home for Ramadan? Our windows are such a great blank canvas and chalk pen drawings are such a simple, effective (and budget-friendly) way to bring some festive Ramadan cheer to your home. I actually did this last year, but this year I’ve made it even easier for me (and you!) to make a gorgeous window display. It only costs about £2 for a chalk pen, and I’m giving you free templates so you can easily recreate these designs on your own windows!

What You Will Need

Honestly, this is the best part- you don’t need much to create a stunning display. Here is your quick materials list:

  • White Liquid Chalk Pen – you can pick these up for around £1 to £2 online or at local craft shops/stationary shop or even IKEA!
  • Blue Tack or Sellotape – to hold your template in place
  • My free Lantern Templates– all you need to do is subscribe to my blog and you can get access to these (and more) for free!
  • Optional: Coloured chalk pens if you want a more colourful vibe

How to Create Your Ramadan Window Art

The best bit about this project is that it doesn’t have to be perfect. Now, I say this as a perfectionist who really struggles with that- but genuinely, the imperfections/ less planned out details is what makes it feel more charming, and unique. So shake it off and let your inner prefectionist go! Add to it as you go along, take away if you don’t like something. It’s your blank canvas. And the great thing is, you can just wipe it away if you make a mistake.

But don’t worry, if you’re like me and need a little bit of help getting started, I got my husband to draw up some lantern templates for us to use- just subscribe to my blog and you can access them in the Library to download.

Step 1: Prep Your Canvas

Give the inside of your windows a quick wipe down so your chalk pen glides on smoothly. You might also want to clean your windows from the outside too (if they’re anything like ours and filthy from the winter!)

Step 2: Stick Up Your Templates (The Easy Way)

If you’re drawing on your patio doors like me, then you just need to go outside and stick the printed templates against the glass using Blue Tack/tape in the position you want them. I worked one panel at a time and stuck both my lantern shapes up.

Tip: Make sure they are facing inwards so you can see them when you go back in!

Step 3: Trace and Create

Once they’re all stuck up- all you need to do is trace over the design through the glass. You might find it a bit tricky if you have double glazing (as you feel like you’re not drawing directly on the paper) but just pick a line and start drawing- it’s easier than it looks). Once you have the main lanterns drawn, you can start adding different freehand elements, like stars, moons, or hanging strings to bring it all together.

Step 4: Get the Family Involved!

My daughter absolutely loves how it looks. Once the main outlines were done, it’s now ready for some coloured chalk pens to fill in the details or add some stars of her own. I even found myself coming back and adding a few details here and there- like tassels from the base of the lanterns.

What if I don’t have access to the outside of my window?

If you live in a flat, or want to decorate a window that you can’t easily reach from the outside, don’t worry! Here are two potential workarounds:

  1. The Night-Time Reflection Trick: This is a two-person job (unless you have something to prop it against/wall to stick it on). Wait until it’s dark outside and then have someone stand slightly behind you, in position and hold up a laptop screen/ipad/printed template so you can see it clearly in the window’s reflection. And just trace from that…
  2. Embrace Your Inner Artist: Perhaps the harder of the two! But just give it a go and freehand it. Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Draw some simple crescent moons and stars, it will look beautiful. Trust me!

Download Your Free Templates

Ready to get started? Here’s the link to the library where you can download the free templates (just subscribe to get the password). I absolutely love this idea and love how it turned out. It’s genuinely made our home feel so festive, even in the sunlight it creates some beautiful shadows when the sun shines through. What a win!
